In the gloom and austerity of post First World War Britain, three young people are brought together in a sleepy English market town – each with a burning ambition to break away from the shame and deprivation of their youth. The arrival of a war damaged veteran in their midst challenges their idealistic hopes for the future, unleashing passion, deceit and betrayal into their lives. Years later the repercussions return to haunt the next generation. Against a backdrop of a new world war, one couple’s search for love is cruelly threatened when a crime hidden for many years is finally brought to the surface exposing the fragile relationships within a family that harbours a terrible secret. This is an epic love story set against the backdrop of a rural community thrust into the front line of global conflict.

A well written story with very good characters. The story pulled me right in from the beginning and didn't let me go until I finished. It starts with the background for each of Jack,Jed,Alice and Flora's lives so it's plainly understood what they have gone through up to the point they meet and why they are thinking the way they do at that point in time.
The country setting of Norfolk England drew my attention because I've been doing genealogy and so a family line from there had me reading about that area.I also like novels written from regency through 1940 eras of England. This story of living in 1917 and extending through WW1 and WW2 and how it affected these people was very good. When I'd finished the book and read these characters were based on real people and true situations that happened to them it was a stunner. They are all strong characters. All four had difficult stuff going on in their souls.I thought how this author shows how life is just plain messy and how people work out the 'messiness' is uniquely interesting. I liked Dan's explanation of following your dream or following your star.I liked Alice's letter to Evie involving what passion is and cautioning her to be aware of the power and consequences it can have on her life.At times I really didn't like Alice.Jack although doing bad and good... I didn't care about him like I did Jed. I think of all the characters I felt Jed was the focus and I cared about how every thing worked out for him.Flora coming from the strict religious cult had a horrid time of it and I'd hoped that things would finally turn out tolerable for her.She needed a break in life without feeling she was an awful person with no hope for any happiness and peace.
The trauma of war on Jack and Peter was well shown.I actually didn't hate Jack because of the war trauma that affected him.It was scary how it did. Evie's feelings of how the world changed from the war into a world she no longer recognized and the essence of living was day to day as tomorrow may not come was ,I felt, a profound description of what it must have truly felt at that time. The link of Peter,Evie and Emma was one I wondered how it could turn out to any thing with a good ending to it.
This story is a good one.I will read more by this author.

Badly written and very strange that it was ever published
Good book
Not a run of the mill 'romance book' but one that had some depth to it .Good book, good author
The Guest Who Stayed
Mr. Penfound's `The Guest Who Stayed' has some of the common errors one might expect of a first novel, and they do interfere with the pace, but only slightly. If you enjoy a story that keeps you turning pages as one issue after another leads through unimaginable twists and turns then you should enjoy `The Guest Who Stayed'.
Set in a small post WW I English village the story entwines the lives of a three teenage youths and that of a wealthy war veteran with only three years to live. It is the story of uncertainty, ambitions, friendships, rape, fear, love, and a horrible secret that must one day come to light.
It merges you into a social and financial culture of a poor and illiterate community struggling in a post war economy. The characters are real, the plot complex, and the ending might best be described as a closure. I found it a book well worth reading.
Interesting -- almost became predictable tho
The people in this somewhat true story come to life in an isolated British village. Among many other things, this unusual love story showed me how history does regrettably repeat itself.
Quite a thrilling read overall. Establishes the characters and then as the book goes on keeps picking up speed, making it difficult to put down... As the official blurb suggests, things get pretty exciting in a "dull" setting. Definitely captures the era it's set in, and the rapid changes, very well. I think there's relatable characters too, even if they frustate you at times - just like real people! Totally worth the relatively small investment... And a sequel is in the works - can't wait!
